    The Creating Value Innovator Award will recognize teams of clinicians who have implemented, or plan to implement, innovative ideas and projects that improve value on the frontlines of healthcare.

  • The Steven Schroeder Award for Outstanding Health Care CEO

    The Steven Schroeder Award for Outstanding Health Care CEO will be awarded to a CEO of a hospital or health care system who has demonstrated courageous and ethical leadership addressing the twin issues of affordability and quality of health care in their community. The award will recognize leadership in measurably reducing patient harm and saving dollars at the same time. Examples of leadership the Award seeks to recognize include:

    • Reducing infections and errors leading to reductions in length of stay and other measurable impacts on patient affordability;
    • "Patient friendly" billing practices and policies such as outcome “guarantees” and waiver of fees associated with avoidable harm;
    • Innovative consumer-friendly price and quality transparency tools accessible to diverse populations;
    • Counselors, social workers, and/or community outreach, that help patients advocate and engage with the health system to achieve the very best, most affordable care for themselves and their families;
    • Preventive practices that measurably reduce the need for acute care services;
    • Maternity and post-partum care practices that reduce unnecessary and expensive medical interventions
    • Application of Choosing Wisely and other clinician best practices to improve cost and quality
    • Fostering nursing leadership and engagement to improve patient safety and demonstrate cost savings to patients

    About the Award:

    • Steven Schroeder has spent five decades inspiring and mentoring leaders to forcefully advocate for better quality, and more affordable health care
    • Nominations will be accepted through September 15th, 2018
    • CEO awardee to be chosen by Costs of Care 
    • Award to be presented at The Leapfrog Group Annual Meeting and Awards Dinner on December 4th, 2018 in Washington, D.C.

    Award Criteria:

    • Nominations can be submitted directly by the CEO or on behalf of the CEO
    • Must include 2-3 examples of how the CEO’s leadership measurably improves patient care and affordability at the same time
    • Eligible candidates include current or recently retired CEOs of hospitals or health care systems
  • The Humana Award for Innovation in Value-based Care

    The Humana Award for Innovation in Value-based Care will be given to a healthcare professional that improves or informs the practice of value-based care. This award seeks to acknowledge unique value-based care interventions designed to address one or more of the following topics: 

    • Ability of a value-based care model to enhance the patient care experience, including patient affordability and safety while improving health outcomes
    • Impact of a value-based care model on the health outcomes of a particular population
    • Effect of a value-based care model on enhancing experiences of physicians and clinicians, including greater satisfaction with the practice of medicine
    • Reduction of high healthcare costs while preserving or improving health outcomes

    About the Award:

    • Humana, a leading health and wellness company, is committed to supporting physicians and other healthcare professionals to address the healthcare challenges of today and inform the practice of medicine tomorrow
    • This award is being sponsored by Humana’s Office of the Chief Medical Officer and is intended as a tribute to innovative practitioners who seek to improve the practice of value-based care to ultimately improve the health of patients
    • The awardee will be chosen by Costs of Care and the Humana Office of the Chief Medical Officer
    • Award to be presented by Costs of Care and Humana at the IHI National Forum in December of 2018 in Orlando, Florida.

    Award Criteria:

    • Innovation must be related to the practice of value-based care
    • Special consideration will be given to applicants interested in evaluating their intervention in a rigorous scientific manner to be shared as peer-reviewed research and/or applicants who can supply preliminary data to support the proposed innovation
    • Special consideration will be given to innovations that include inter-professional collaboration
